Goluboi. Gay Dictionary (Russia).
Blue on blue.
Goluboi in the Russian language is the word for the light blue color and is a slang word for faggot. A gay is called goluboi in the same way that a lesbian is called rozovyi which in Russian means the pink color. As elsewhere in the world in Russia, young boys are dressed in blue and young girls in pink, and it seems that gays are named goluboi because they like people of the same color.
On the other hand, some say that the origin of this expression comes from the homosexual practices of the nobility at the time of the czars, that were the blue-blood people. We also have another source for this expression that refers to the bluish light of the Moscow metro, an area used by gays to do cruising. Also in Russian is linked phonetically with Golubok and Golub’ that means pigeon, so in Russia, gays are called pigeons too and then we have a link to the Spanish expressions “Palomo cojo” (lame pigeon) and “Palomo”, Spanish slang words for gay men. Curious isn’ t it?
