archaic term for homosexual in use until the late 19th century. It is a loan word from the German language, Urningtum, created in 1864 by the homosexual activist Karl Heinrich Ulrichs (1825-1895), in reference to the goddess Aphrodite Urania on the Symposium of Plato, protective of homosexual love, and would be the so-called third sex.
Variations: Uranismo, Urningo/a.
