The neutral word queer, derived from the German “que” that means twisted, deviant, not acquired overtly sexual connotations until 1920, when was commonly used to refer homosexuals. “Queer” enjoyed great popularity among gay men who took it to define themselves until 1930, when it began to spread the use of the word gay.
