Apparently, it derived from the slang of the late 19th century, “dike” which meant “dress formal or elegant way. Dyke appeared first with expressions bulldyker, bulldyke, bull-dyking woman, and then became an independent word with the same meaning, and would be used to insult masculine lesbian.
