How to say gay in Latvian
Below are the words of our Latvian Gay Dictionary that we will expand in new editions. If you know any more, please, contact us. But first some information about the language and where it is spoken.
Latvian is the official language of the Republic of Latvia and belongs to the Indo-European family. This language has about a half million speakers.
The situation of Latvia’s LGBT community is very bad, a shame for a country that belongs to the European Union and remains socially anchored in the Soviet morality, that relates homosexuality to child abuse. In 2006, the parliament modified the constitution to define marriage as between a man and a woman, making any LGBT legislative advance much more difficult. Equal marriages celebrated abroad are not recognized and civil unions or homoparental adoption are not allowed. Laws against discrimination are limited and the hate speech is not condemned. This allows an important anti-LGBT social mobilization and reduces activism, as the community fears that greater pressure for sexual diversity may cause an increase in attacks and aggressions against LGBT people, which are quite frequent in Latvia. All this is reflected in the surveys since the acceptance of sexual diversity increases very slowly. Latvia participates in the Baltic Pride to be held in Riga, the capital, in June 2018.
Highlights in the Latvian Gay Dictionary, as in the other countries of the Soviet sphere, the false relationship between homosexuality and pedophilia reinforced by these societies through their words.
