Persian or Farsi is the language spoken in Iran, belonging to the Indo-European languages family, with over a hundred million speakers. It is also spoken in other countries in the area through their corresponding dialectal variants such as Farsi Dari in Afghanistan.

The situation of gays and lesbians is terrible since any sexual behavior outside heterosexual marriage and adultery are punishable by the death penalty, homosexual anal intercourse directly, and petting or two women or two men caught in a bed under a blanket, at the fourth time. It is estimated that between 4000 and 6000 gays and lesbians have been sentenced to death since 1979. However, transsexuality is legal, being Iran one of the countries where more sex-change operations are carried out. In many cases, they are gay men who have to choose between changing sex or jail and death.
